Botox Q & A

What is Botox?

Botox is an injectable treatment made from purified botulinum toxin that’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved for treating moderate to severe wrinkles. Botox temporarily reduces muscle activity. As muscle contractions relax, wrinkles caused by those muscles diminish.

When a precise dose of Botox is injected into the targeted muscle, it reduces wrinkles without affecting the rest of your facial muscles. As a result, you’ll still have natural facial expressions.

What age-related wrinkles are diminished with Botox?

Botox is primarily used to minimize frown lines that develop between your eyes, crow’s feet in the corners of your eyes, and the deep horizontal furrows that develop on your forehead. While it may be used to lift eyebrows or to diminish the appearance of dimpled skin on the chin, Botox works best on wrinkles known as dynamic wrinkles.

Dynamic wrinkles form as you repeatedly use the same muscles to laugh, frown, squint, and make other facial expressions. These muscles are attached to your skin so as they contract, they pull on skin, creating creases that change your expression.

Skin naturally loses strength and elasticity over time, causing expression creases to become permanent wrinkles that continue to deepen as you get older. Other procedures help diminish fine lines and wrinkles, but Botox is the only treatment that’s effective for these deep, muscle-caused wrinkles.

What can I expect during and after treatment?

Before you get a Botox injection, our nurse practitioner talks with you about how the procedure works and what to expect. Your skin can be numbed to ensure your comfort, then the actual injections only take about 10 minutes.

You won’t have any downtime following a Botox treatment, so you can return to your daily life. However, you should wait two hours before engaging in strenuous physical activity.

How long do results last?

You’ll see results from the injections within 24-48 hours and you can expect the effect to last up to four months. It’s safe to get another injection when wrinkles reappear. In fact, repeat treatments often lead to longer-lasting results.

When you’re ready to fight the effect of aging, don’t hesitate to contact us for an appointment to examine your skin and determine if Botox will achieve your desired results. Our nurse practitioner is well trained and highly experienced in providing Botox that meets our patients’ expectations.
