Annual Physical Exams Q & A

What is a sports physical?

If you’re involved in organized sports or your child wants to join their school team, a sports physical is required before playing. You also need a physical to return to play after you’ve been injured or if you develop a skin infection.

Sports physicals, or pre-participation exams, are different from a typical annual check-up because they focus on whether you’re healthy enough to participate in sports. The following concerns are considered during the exam:

  • Is there an injury, illness, or condition that prevents you from competing with healthy participants?
  • Is there an injury, illness, or condition that might be aggravated by athletic competition?
  • Does the injury, illness, or condition put you or another athlete at risk?

During a sports exam, Dr. Boulware reviews your medical history for any past injuries (concussions, sprains, fractures), surgeries, or health conditions that might affect your ability to participate in sports. Then he checks your musculoskeletal system, assessing bones, muscles, and joints for strength, flexibility and any signs of inflammation or stress.

What is the purpose of a work physical?

Dr. Boulware has experience performing all of the different types of work physicals that may be requested of employees in Missouri including:

  • Pre-employment physicals (verify you meet minimum physical requirements)
  • Corporate Wellness Exams (employers may offer incentives for wellness profiles)
  • Department of Transportation Physicals (vision tests and DOT physicals per guidelines)
  • Hazardous Material Physicals (HAZMAT, meets fire department requirements)

What are the requirements for school physicals?

Whether your child needs a preschool examination, immunizations, or the school has requested an examination to check for a contagious disease, you can count on Dr. Boulware’s experience with children to make your child feel comfortable. Dr. Boulware can also help with the vision examination required for student enrolling in kindergarten or first grade.

Even if it’s not time for a school physical, you may want to contact us to schedule an exam if your child hasn’t been in for a routine exam. It’s important for children to have regular check-ups to be sure they don’t have any developmental delays or early signs of any health problems.
